DSM CHIPS FAQ

Do It Yourself (D.I.Y.)

Q: Where is my ECU?

A: The ECU is behind the center console on Eclipses, Lasers and Talons. On the Galant VR-4, it is located on the right of the glove box, behind the passenger's kickpanel. Glove box removal is optional.  Check here for 1g Eclipses, Talons, and Lasers, www.technomotive.com

Q: I do not want to send out my ECU due to downtime! What should I do?

A: Look in your local Yellow Pages under Electrical and call around for the best Quotes.  Have a fellow DSM'er do it for you.

Q: Where can I get the correct Capacitors and/or socket for my EPROM ECU so I can do this myself?

A: I recommend someone experienced perform this installation but you can find this at your local electronics store. You can find it online at http://www.digikey.com

Q: How do I know if I have an EPROM ECU?

A: The only way to tell is to open the ECU. Check here:

Or here:

Q:  How do I Socket my own EPROM ECU?

A: Here are the TMO instructions: www.technomotive.com .
1. Clean off as much of the conformal coating from the TOP and BOTTOM of the EPROM with acetone, or fingernail polish remover.
2. Add some fresh solder to each pin before attempting to unsolder it.
3. When you have unsoldered all 28 pins, grab a whole row of 14 at a time with a needle nose pliers, and wiggle them.  This will help snap the leads loose from the holes in the board, making it easier to remove the EPROM without damage to the ECU.
4. Slide a small screwdriver under one side of the EPROM and slowly work your way across underneath it, wiggling the screwdriver back and forth a little as you go. If you feel a lot of resistance, or see the circuit traces are vias start to pull up, STOP, Figure out which pin are still hanging on, and try cleaning them up before proceeding.

Q: How do I properly install a DSM Chip?

A: Before removing the chip from the socket, take notice of which way the notch on the left side of the chip faces, place the notch toward the CENTER of the board. You will see that there is a notch in the socket, and silk screened unto the PC board, that matches the same direction as the notch on the end of the chip. Slide a small straight blade screwdriver in from the right side of the chip, between the chip and the socket, and work your way slowly across under the chip, prying up slowly as you go. Try to pry slowly and evenly, so you do not bend any of the pins. When inserting a new chip, you may need to lay the chip on the pin side, and bend the whole row of pins inward slightly, so that the pins line up with the socket. Be sure ALL the pins are lined up in the socket properly before pressing the whole chip in equaling at the same time.

Q: How do I wire my clutchswitch for the stutterbox, without interfering with my remote starter?

A:
1. Plug the clutch switch back in
2. Is the diode kit already installed in the green/red wire? If so, just cut off the wire from the diode that goes to the starter relay. I used a yellow wire in my kit. You're done! Without the starter relay wire connected the car can be started without pushing in the clutch.
3. If you have NOT installed the diode kit, cut the green/red striped wire in half, just as you would if you were going to install at diode kit.
4. Connect a piece of wire from the end of the green/red wire that connects to the switch. Leave the other end of the green/red wire disconnected. You can tape it off, or whatever.
5. Connect the other end of the wire to pin 104 of the ECU, just like in the diode kit instructions. Be SURE to cut the black ground wire OFF of pin 104. You're done!
